Beyond Treatment: How GS1 Kenya is Digitalizing Healthcare

Access to quality healthcare is no longer defined solely by the availability of hospitals, medical equipment or skilled professionals. Increasingly, it is also determined by how efficiently health information, medicines and patients can be identified, tracked and managed throughout the healthcare journey. It is this vision that continues to drive GS1 Kenya’s efforts to transform healthcare through the adoption of global standards.

This commitment was evident during a recent community engagement forum organized by the GS1 Kenya – Global Healthcare Centre of Excellence (GHCE) at Fred’s Ranch in Kajiado County. The meeting brought together Community Health Promoters (CHPs), healthcare advocates and GS1 Kenya’s leadership to discuss practical solutions that can bridge the gap between healthcare facilities and communities.

Speaking during the engagement, ,Mr.Peter Otieno, the Chief Executive Officer of GS1 Kenya reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting innovative healthcare delivery by taking telemedicine beyond urban centres and making it accessible to communities at the grassroots level. The vision is to simplify access to healthcare while ensuring every patient interaction, diagnosis, treatment and referral can be managed through a reliable and traceable process.

The initiative aligns with GS1 Kenya’s broader mission of promoting global standards that improve patient safety, enhance operational efficiency and strengthen interoperability across Kenya’s healthcare system. By standardizing how patients, medicines, medical devices and healthcare locations are identified, healthcare providers can exchange accurate information seamlessly, reducing errors and improving the quality of care.

The GS1 Kenya leadership team, which participated in the community mobilization exercise, emphasized that standards are becoming an essential foundation for modern healthcare. As healthcare increasingly embraces digital solutions, standardized identification and data exchange will enable hospitals, clinics and community health workers to work together more effectively while ensuring that patients receive consistent, safe and coordinated care.

A key highlight of the discussions was GHCE’s growing role as a model healthcare facility demonstrating the practical application of GS1 Standards in healthcare. Through its implementation of standardized identification and traceability systems, the facility has strengthened patient safety, improved operational workflows and enhanced interoperability between different healthcare processes.

Beyond serving patients, GHCE has positioned itself as a valuable learning centre for other healthcare institutions seeking to modernize their operations. Hospitals, health centres and policymakers can draw important lessons from GHCE’s experience in implementing internationally recognized standards that support efficient service delivery while building trust in healthcare systems.

Community Health Promoters also play a vital role in this transformation. As trusted links between healthcare facilities and local communities, they are well positioned to support awareness, encourage the adoption of digital healthcare services and help communities understand the benefits of standardized healthcare processes. Their involvement will be instrumental as telemedicine expands into rural and underserved areas.

For GS1 Kenya, the journey extends beyond introducing standards. It is about creating an ecosystem where every healthcare interaction can be trusted, every medicine can be verified, every patient can be accurately identified and every health record can move securely across the continuum of care. These capabilities become even more important as Kenya accelerates digital health initiatives and strives toward universal health coverage.

The collaboration between GS1 Kenya and GHCE demonstrates how partnerships can transform healthcare delivery. By combining innovation, community engagement and globally recognized standards, the two organizations are helping lay the foundation for a healthcare system that is more connected, more transparent and more responsive to the needs of every Kenyan.

As more healthcare institutions look for sustainable ways to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency, GHCE stands as a practical example of what is possible when global standards are integrated into everyday healthcare delivery. Through continued collaboration, capacity building and advocacy, GS1 Kenya is ensuring that the future of healthcare in Kenya is not only digital but also interoperable, traceable and centred on patient safety.
