Healing Through Standards: GS1 Kenya’s First Free Medical Camp at the Islamic University of Kenya, Kisaju

Healthcare delivery in Kenya is evolving, and GS1 Kenya is demonstrating that standards can be a powerful tool for change. Earlier this month in Kisaju, GS1 Kenya’s Centre of Excellence Healthcare facility (GHCE) hosted its first-ever free medical camp, bringing together healthcare providers, patients, and local communities. This two-day initiative highlighted how global standards can extend beyond supply chains to directly impact lives—ensuring safe medicines, authentic medical devices, and better patient outcomes.

A Community United

The camp was more than free check-ups. It became a vibrant hub where 250 attendees, including 50 local community members, came together. Students from the Islamic University were eager to learn, families expressed gratitude for accessible care, and healthcare workers showcased innovation in action.

Standards in Action

GS1 Kenya demonstrated how traceability and identification systems safeguard patient safety. Patients received wristbands that securely captured their records. When medicine packs were scanned, the system verified product details on dosage, batch, and expiry ensuring accuracy at every step.

This seamless process gave patients confidence and healthcare workers assurance that care was both efficient and trustworthy.

Voices of Gratitude

Professor Khalid Dalal, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University, praised the initiative: “Access to healthcare is expensive, but this camp allowed everyone to experience GS1 systems firsthand—proving their reliability, dependability, and visibility.”

Ms.Eva Buyu, GS1 Kenya’s General Manager, echoed the sentiment, calling the camp a learning experience and urging more partners to join future initiatives.

And in his keynote, GS1 Kenya CEO, Mr.Peter Otieno emphasized the broader vision:

“This medical camp is a clear demonstration that standards are not just about supply chains—they are about people. By ensuring safe medicines and authentic medical devices, we are directly improving lives in our communities.”

More Than Just a Camp

For students, it was a lesson in how standards safeguard patient safety. For the community, it was a rare chance to receive free medical care. And for GS1 Kenya, it was proof that their vision of transforming healthcare delivery is not just possible — it is already happening.

The Kisaju medical camp was more than an event. It was a story of hope, innovation, and humanity. GS1 Kenya showed that when compassion meets technology, healthcare becomes safer, more reliable, and more accessible.
