Helping Kenyan Farmers Access Global Markets Through GS1 Traceability

Ensuring Product Authenticity and Compliance in Global Markets

Kenya’s fresh-produce exporters face a rising challenge: strict international rules on traceability and product origin. Exporters risk losing lucrative markets if they cannot prove where their fruits or vegetables came from.

GS1 standards provide a practical solution. Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) identify each product, while Global Location Numbers (GLNs) trace farms, packing houses and distribution centers. This enables end-to-end visibility of the supply chain, ensuring that every mango, avocado or horticultural product can be tracked from farm to market. By implementing GS1 traceability, Kenyan farmers increase their credibility abroad, reduce shipment rejections and strengthen competitiveness in global trade.
