Chikungunya Virus Gains Ground Globally, WHO Sounds Alarm.

A Growing Global Health Threat.

The World Health Organization has issued a fresh warning as the chikungunya virus continues to spread across parts of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Known for causing high fever, joint pain and fatigue, the mosquito-borne disease is now being reported in regions that had previously never recorded cases. Health authorities are especially concerned about its rapid transmission in urban areas with high human mobility and limited public health infrastructure.

Efforts to contain the virus are facing serious setbacks due to gaps in how patient movements, medical supplies and mosquito control materials are tracked. In some regions, faulty or missing records are making it difficult to identify where outbreaks began or how far the disease has spread through communities and supply chains. Traceability offers a critical line of defence by helping teams monitor the origin and journey of healthcare tools, mosquito nets, insecticides and even imported goods that may fuel mosquito breeding.

In the face of emerging and re-emerging diseases like chikungunya, knowing exactly where things come from and where they have been not just a technical advantage, it is a public health necessity.
