Road Safety Authorities Push for Traceable Spare Parts and Vehicle Histories

How Traceability Is Shaping Safer Roads for All

Following a recent spike in fatal accidents linked to faulty spare parts, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intensified its push for traceability in the automotive industry. Officials are calling for a database that can track not only vehicle ownership but also every replacement part used throughout a vehicle’s life.

Here, GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) and Serial Shipping Container Codes (SSCCs) can provide the structure needed. Genuine automotive parts can be barcoded with unique GTINs, allowing inspectors and garages to verify authenticity instantly. Meanwhile, Global Location Numbers (GLNs) can map where and when each part was installed creating a full traceable vehicle history.

Such a system would make it nearly impossible for counterfeit parts to infiltrate the market undetected. It would also enable authorities to issue targeted recalls more efficiently, saving lives and costs. For Kenya’s growing transport and logistics ecosystem, the message is clear: safety starts with traceability.

With GS1 standards in place, every journey on Kenya’s roads can be a little safer and every product under the hood a little more trusted.
