Sometimes the Best Help Is Just Being There.
When someone you care about is going through a hard time mentally, it can be difficult to know what to do or say. You might feel helpless or scared of saying the wrong thing. But sometimes, just being there makes a big difference.
Start by simply listening. Let them talk if they want to. You do not have to fix everything just being present and giving them space to express how they feel can mean a lot. Avoid judging or giving advice too quickly. Instead, show kindness and understanding. A simple “I am here for you” or “You are not alone” can be more powerful than you think.

Check in on them regularly. A quick call, a message or a visit can help them feel seen and valued. Sometimes people struggling with mental health pull away from others. Try not to take it personally. Just keep gently reaching out.
Encourage them to seek help if they have not already. This might be talking to a counsellor, a doctor or someone they trust. Offer to go with them or help them find support. Mental health is just like physical health getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Finally, take care of yourself too. Supporting someone can be emotionally heavy. Make sure you also talk to someone or take breaks when needed. You can only pour from a full cup.
Being there for someone does not mean having all the answers. It just means showing up with love, patience and a listening heart. That alone can be a light in their darkest moment.
