New ICT import rules in Kenya harness traceability to boost safety and curb counterfeit tech.
Kenya’s ICT regulator, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), has introduced stricter rules for importing tech products like phones and computers. Now, importers must prove that all devices are certified, safe and meet Kenyan standards before they reach the market.
To make this work, traceability is key. Each device must have a unique ID like a barcode or RFID tag so it can be tracked from the factory all the way to the shop. This helps stop substandard and poor-quality products from getting into Kenya.
With traceability, authorities can check if devices are genuine, safe and up to standard. It also helps protect consumers from harmful or unreliable gadgets, while keeping importers and sellers accountable.
As Kenya’s tech sector grows, traceability is becoming essential. It builds trust, improves quality and ensures only the best ICT products are available to Kenyans.
